Firefox UX proposal : Open link in new tab context menu

This is my humble proposal for improving “Open Link in New Tab” context menu user experience.

Since tabbed browsing becomes the main feature in popular web browsers nowadays; Usability for tabbed browsing should be well designed, which mozilla firefox, IMO, has done really good so far.

One missing point on tabbed browsing UX is an “Open Link in New Tab” context menu which is, some how, misplaced, a bit.

Firefox Open Link in New Tab UX proposal

From user’s point of view and expectation, in this tabbed browsing era, all links should be opened in a new tab, and “New Window” should be lower prioritised than “New Tab”, therefore “Open Link in New Tab” should be put above “Open Link in New Window” as shown.

Google Chrome is using this approach, too.

I’ve filed bug to Mozilla’s Bugzilla.

  2. I like your idea that ‘Open in new tab’ should be the first on the list. However, if people already get used to the fact that it’s the second one, it might confuse people for a while.

It’s always a bit hard for me to switching between Chrome and Safari and always need to read which link opens to the new tab.
